The Pascoe couple returned to the swimming pool that saved their lives during the California wildfires.

Mr. and Mrs. John and Jan Pascoe drove away from their house on the hill overlooking the city of Santa Rosa, Sonoma County as the forest fire approached on the evening of October 8.

Mr. John, 70 years old, and his 65-year-old wife smelled smoke around 10 p.m. but did not evacuate because Ms. Pascoe’s phone said the fire was about 17 km away.

They then received a call from their eldest daughter, Zoe Giraudo.

Around midnight, another call from their daughter woke Mr. and Mrs. Pascoe.

Carrying their 17-year-old cat, the couple drove to evacuate.

Wildfire destroys homes in Fountaingrove, Santa Rosa.

It was at this moment that the grandparents remembered a neighbor’s outdoor swimming pool.

Waiting until the neighbor’s house and the big tree near the house caught fire, the grandparents jumped into the 1m2 deep pool.

The couple hugged each other for 6 hours soaking in cold water to keep warm while the fire swept the surrounding area with a radius of 8 km.

My grandparents’ house was destroyed by fire.

The California wildfire has left at least 31 people dead, making it the deadliest wildfire in California since 1933. Hundreds of people are still missing after fires in 22 areas swept through traditional lands.
