Porsche Taycan’s gearbox – ‘the loner’ in the electric car industry

What’s attractive about the Porsche Taycan?

The single-speed transmission on most electric vehicles still operates quite well.

The gearbox on the Taycan is a solution researched by Porsche itself.

Porsche Taycan launched in Singapore, November 2019.

`With a two-speed transmission, we can keep both,` says ZF’s head of E-Mobility engineering, Stephan Demmerer.

The system does that by increasing the conversion rate from battery power to actual power at the wheels.

The transmission is programmed to shift between two speeds at a speed of 69 km/h, although the computer can intervene to change gears at other speeds based on the distance, terrain or intended distance of the driver.

“There really is a race to make electric vehicles more energy efficient,” said Venkat Viswanathan, a mechanical engineer at Carnegie Mellon University.

The new two-speed gearbox cannot explode yet because it is very complicated.

Furthermore, developing more than one step is not really necessary so far.

The two-speed configuration will be applied when customers use it for many different purposes, and clearly the 5% improved distance will help you save more money while the battery’s storage capacity is getting better and better.

Unless you can afford a shiny new Taycan, don’t wait to get your hands on this technology.
