Portugal needs a miracle to surpass Russia and win tickets to the World Cup

Compared to Portugal hosting Luxembourg, Russia may have a bit more difficulty when they have to play as guests at Azerbaijan’s stadium.

With a bigger gap of three points – a consequence of Portugal being held to a 1-1 draw by Israel in the last match, Russia was even allowed to draw with Azerbaijan which was enough to finish top of Group F and win a direct ticket to the World Cup.

Ronaldo was absent due to a penalty card, but with a large difference in class, Portugal could still win big against Luxembourg.

Portugal also seems to have clearly determined that their chances of competing for the top spot in the group no longer exist, so they soon sought to preserve their strength for the play-off round.

However, while preparing for the two play-off rounds, Portugal can still hold out hope, albeit very faintly, that a miracle will come to them today.

Azerbaijan is not on the same level as Russia, but is still a very annoying opponent for the team under coach Capello.

Russia (red shirt) once lost at Northern Ireland and struggled to beat Azerbaijan (blue shirt) 1-0 in the first leg at home in Moscow.

The difference in goal difference – loss between the two teams is currently relatively large – Russia +15, Portugal +8 – but that doesn’t mean it can’t be leveled.

At that time, the two teams will be equal in points and goal difference as well as direct confrontation (each team wins a match with a score of 1-0).
