Going to a parent meeting after his son finished the first semester of his first year of elementary school, Mr. Quang Thach, in Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi, was excited because his son was in the group with 9-10 points in both Math and Language.

Previously, Mr. Thach was very happy when he could read the words in the Canh Dieu book and could read the long reading exercises in the second book that he had not yet learned.

At the end of September 2020, many parents shared their `headache` when they saw that the curriculum was too heavy and their children could not keep up.

After two lessons, his son came home crying, `I’m scared to go to school`, his father had to let him quit.

`The teacher is really good,` Mr. Thach commented, hoping that in the second semester she would tutor him so that his child’s writing could be cleaner and more beautiful.

Receiving her daughter’s first semester test results with scores of 9 and 10 in Vietnamese and Math, Ms. Ngoc Linh, 37 years old, in Hoang Mai district, Hanoi, expressed surprise.

When her daughter entered first grade, Linh’s family moved from the South to Hanoi.

The number of free evenings for children is less, and instead they have to spend more time teaching their mothers to read and write.

The first surprise came to Ms. Linh in mid-December 2020 when she loudly read the name of the sign and brand while going to the supermarket with her.

When announcing the results of the first semester to Ms. Linh’s family, the teacher also commented that her daughter was one of the most surprising students because her pace was somewhat slower than her friends, and at first she `struggled`.

Ms. Dang Thi Kim Chi, in District 2, Ho Chi Minh City, also received positive results after her youngest daughter completed the first semester of first grade. The mother admitted that when the school year started, she was also worried like many women.

`The youngest child learns letters faster than his older brother, and does math better. It only took about 2 weeks of confusion at first, then he absorbed the lesson well and became active while the previous child took nearly two months,` she shared.

The mother rated the new program as faster than the old program and textbooks, but not heavier.

Ms. Chi believes that many parents worry and interfere a lot with teachers’ pedagogical expertise, causing the opposite effect, making children more stressed.

Grade 1 students learn Vietnamese

Vietnamese lesson for 1st grade students, Bich Son Primary School (Viet Yen district, Bac Giang).

In the 2020-2021 school year, first grade students begin learning the new general education curriculum and new textbooks.

After a month of putting the new books into use, many parents and teachers rated teaching and learning Vietnamese as `more difficult and difficult` than the old program.

A few days later, the Vietnamese textbook 1 Canh Dieu series caused controversy when it used fables, inappropriate translations and was said to `teach bad habits to students`.
