On May 4, Ms. To Thi Anh Hong was present at the intensive care room, Ba Ria Hospital, to meet her son who unfortunately was brain dead and could no longer recover after a serious traffic accident.

Mrs. Hong kissed her son one last time before saying goodbye.

Mr. Phuc (name has been changed), 24 years old, has just completed his military service and will be deployed before the Lunar New Year 2021. On the evening of May 2, he was riding a motorbike on a newly built road without electric lights and fell into a hole.

At the hospital, hearing her daughter’s friends tell her that Phuc once expressed her wish to donate her organs if she unfortunately died, Mrs. Hong decided to carry out her son’s wish, even though she felt `very, very painful`.

The surgical team bowed their heads in silence, expressing gratitude for the donor’s noble gesture before performing the organ removal surgery on May 4.

On the morning of May 4, doctors performed surgery to remove the boy’s heart, liver and two kidneys.

On May 6, at Cho Ray Hospital, the health of two kidney transplant patients was stable, all vital indicators were normal.

Sharing about the difficult decision to donate her child’s organs, Ms. Hong confided that seeing her child stumble, get scratched, and cut his hand was heartbreaking.

When asked by the doctors what she wanted for help, the mother expressed that she did not have any great wishes.

`My mother’s fate is here. Thank you for coming to be my child. Even though it was short, I am very proud to have a good child. You fell down but helped many others stand up healthy,` she said.

Venerable Thich Minh Nhut, abbot of Hong Duc pagoda, Ba Ria – Vung Tau province, further shared that Mr. Phuc was born with only a mother, in difficult circumstances, so from a young age he went to the pagoda to live with a monk.

In November 2020, a 30-year-old man, also in Ba Ria – Vung Tau, suffered a brain-dead traffic accident.
