Ms. Vy received the phone call in her home in Nam Dinh on April 1, after learning that her daughter Doan Thi Huong escaped the death penalty.

Shah Alam High Court, Malaysia today sentenced Doan Thi Huong to 3 years and 4 months in prison for `intentionally causing injury with a weapon or dangerous method` in the murder of North Korean citizen Kim Chol.

Sharing with VnExpress, Ms. Nguyen Thi Vy (Doan Thi Huong’s stepmother) said she did not sleep well last night hoping for good things at this morning’s trial.

Looking at the image of her daughter smiling brightly online this morning, she was happy and smiled endlessly because `Huong no longer cried like before.`

`This morning my husband also called to announce the results of the trial. He laughed loudly on the phone and told everyone at home to rest assured and wait for the day their daughter reunites,` Ms. Vy said at her home in Nam

After the trial, Doan Thi Huong and Mr. Thanh thanked the Vietnamese government, relevant agencies and lawyers for their efforts to protect Huong’s rights.

Talking to AFP reporters, Ms. Vy expressed her joy when her daughter escaped the death penalty after burning incense to thank her ancestors for their blessings, saying that the family `wanted Huong to be released immediately`.

`If anyone gets to meet her, please tell her to try, just over a month more,` she said, hoping Huong will be resilient until she is released.

Huong and Indonesian citizen Siti Aisyah are the two main defendants in the case of North Korean citizen Kim Chol’s murder at Kuala Lumpur airport in February 2017.

In previous trials, both Huong and Siti declared their innocence, claiming they were tricked into participating in a `prank` targeting Kim Chol.

Huong’s family said they are ready to welcome her back.
