`I think Taiwan needs to start considering some asymmetric and anti-access regional strategies,` US National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien said at the October 16 event of the Aspen Institute in the capital.

`Taiwan needs to really strengthen itself in every way possible to prevent mainland China from launching any amphibious operations or ‘gray zone’ tactics against the island,` O’Brien said.

`Gray zone` tactics are defined as actions that create tensions below the level of war, without creating a pretext for conflict to occur and causing other countries to officially intervene militarily.

Rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait have led some experts to say that China could take advantage of the potentially chaotic outcome of the US election to unify the island of Taiwan, even by force.

When asked if there was any concern that China would deploy an amphibious operation or non-military means to control the island of Taiwan, O’Brien did not think that `China wants or is prepared for an amphibious operation.`

`It is a difficult activity for China, and at the same time Beijing will have to watch how Washington reacts. If we participate, this could put them in danger when they try to do so,` O

O’Brien commented that China could use its huge missile arsenal to `destroy` the island of Taiwan, but it is unclear `what they would gain from that`.

The Chinese Army (PLA) recently organized many landing exercises to occupy islands around the Taiwan Strait with many advanced weapons.

Experts believe that the above activity is part of Beijing’s `gray zone` tactic to increase pressure on Taipei, causing the island’s defense system to overload and become fatigued without any intervention.

China considers Taiwan a part of its territory awaiting reunification and is ready to use force if necessary.

Experts say Mr. Xi signaled that the PLA will speed up preparations for any potential conflict in the waters around China, including the Taiwan Strait area.

Beijing reacted violently when Washington increased its support for Taipei, including visits by senior officials in the US government and large-value arms sales contracts to the island.
