The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and the cruiser USS Bunker Hill arrived in Da Nang this morning, starting a friendship visit to Vietnam until March 9.

USS Theodore Roosevelt is the fourth super aircraft carrier of the Nimitz class, built on October 31, 1981 and launched three years later.

The ship’s logo features a bust of President Roosevelt, below is the letter `TR` (standing for Theodore Roosevelt) and the Latin slogan `Qui Plantavit Curabit` (The one who nurtures us will take care of us).

USS Theodore Roosevelt has a length of 333 m, a width of 77 m and a full load displacement of 106,000 tons, one of the largest warships in US naval history.

The ship had a post office with a unique identification code, allowing sailors to send and receive letters from family.

There is no wifi or mobile phone signal on the ship, each sailor can only access the Internet on common computers, usage time depends on rank and position.

Nimitz-class aircraft carriers such as the Theodore Roosevelt were designed to replace the retired Kitty Hawk and Enterprise class aircraft carriers.

To perform missions across the world’s oceans, the USS Theodore Roosevelt is equipped with two A4W nuclear reactors placed in separate compartments to provide power for the propulsion and electrical systems.

The heat from the fission reaction in the reactor heats the water and creates high-pressure steam.

This helps the ship not have to carry reserve fuel, allowing it to increase its time and range at sea, because Nimitz-class aircraft carriers only have to refuel after 20-25 years of operation.

Part of the steam is directed to the piston system of the steam catapult below the deck, creating thrust to help the planes take off on the short runway.

The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt is equipped with a shipboard air wing (CVW), which can carry a maximum of 130 F/A-18 fighters or 85-90 aircraft of all types, but usually only deploys 64 aircraft.

The main assets of the USS Theodore Roosevelt are 48 F/A-18E/F Super Hornet multi-role fighters.

The ship is also staffed with two MH-60S/R helicopter squadrons for light transport, submarine hunting, reconnaissance and search and rescue missions.

In addition to the aircraft carrier air group, USS Theodore Roosevelt is equipped with air defense weapon complexes, including two Mk 57 Sea Sparrow missile launchers, two RIM-116 short-range missile platforms and three extreme-range defense artillery complexes.

This visit to Vietnam by the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt is a continuation of the historic 2018 visit of the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, taking place at a time when the two countries are preparing to celebrate the 25th anniversary of establishing foreign relations.

`The visit not only helps strengthen bilateral defense relations but also helps further promote cultural and professional exchanges. We are honored to participate in this important visit and receive
