Mr. and Mrs. Berriz have been together for 55 years.

When the fire destroyed the motel on the top of the hill, Mr. Armando and his wife, Carmen Berriz, jumped into the swimming pool to take shelter for hours, praying for the fire to pass quickly, according to CNN.

However, when the fire died down, Armando survived but his partner of 55 years did not survive.

Before the wildfires struck, Mr. and Mrs. Berriz were enjoying a vacation in Santa Rosa with their daughter, her husband, and their grandchildren.

At about 1 a.m. on October 8, Luis Ocon, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Berriz, turned on the light and discovered a red light outside.

`It was like an explosion, there were flames,` Ocon said.

Ocon got in the car.

Descending to the bottom of the hill, the Ocon couple noticed that Mr. and Mrs. Carmen and Armando were not behind.

On the way down, Ocon met a firefighter who took his phone number and promised to look for Carmen and Armando.

Stranded

The Ocon couple later learned that their parents were trapped because of a fallen tree blocking the road, so they got out of the car and returned home.

`My parents held hands and jumped into the pool to hide from the fire,` Monica recounted.

The two hid in the swimming pool for hours.

Every time they emerged from the water to breathe, they prayed to comfort each other.

`Close to dawn, my mother couldn’t bear it anymore,` Monica said.

After the fire died down, the 76-year-old man walked down the hill, past the ashes.

`Dad comforted us, instead of us comforting him,` Ocon said.

Mr. Armando has been discharged from the hospital and is resting at his home in Salinas, California.
